Tips for selling your old clothes

While donating your old duds to Goodwill is always a great idea, you can also make a little cash off your castoffs by selling your clothes to a consignment or vintage store. Depending on the condition of the clothes, many stores will either pay you in cash a certain percentage or store credit (usually the higher value of the two), which you can turn around to nab some nifty pieces.

But first, you have to secure the sale on your old stuff. You can read the full list of tips at the source, but several things are paramount: clean your clothes, get rid of any spots, iron, and present it on a hanger, not wadded into a bag. Also, take into account the neighborhood — chances are the nicer the area, the more the store will pay.

Speaking of neighborhoods… One of my favorite fashion bloggers, Jessica Schroeder of What I Wore, has banded with her friends to create the site Vintage Where?, which provides a handy state-by-state (and in some cases city-by-city) guide to the best vintage stores. Because in the end, you want a recommendation from someone who’s had a great find.
