The More You Know: The Croydon Facelift

Victoria Beckham and the croydon facelift

It’s indisputable that Victoria Beckham, formerly of the Spice Girls and currently of “Posh and Becks,” looked like kind of an orange-tinted bag of bones on American Idol last night. I ain’t hating. I had her Barbie doll as a kid, I’m just saying Posh’s growing likeness to her plastic counterpart is disturbing.

But here’s something you might not know about: the Croydon facelift. It’s that high bun she was wearing that probably required a crowbar and enough Aerosol to drop birds from the sky. The Croydon facelift speaks volumes about the English class system. Also known as the “Essex facelift” and the “council-house facelift,” the stereotype is that the hairstyle is worn largely by low-income women of South London to make their faces appear tauter and younger.

It’s an easy hair do, as long as you don’t have a short hair style. Thing is, it causes alopecia and is unbelievably uncomfortable. But Victoria Beckham, as well as celebs like Nicole Kidman and Kate Winslet, have started embracing the Croydon facelift.

Is it about our obsession with youth? Our obsession with class stereotypes? Or is an updo just an updo?
