Is “Mad Men” Vintage Over Or Just Beginning?

Women of Mad Men

Sure, Jon Hamm’s Don Draper is damn sexy, but it’s harder not to fall in love with the lush 60s wardrobes of Joan Holloway, Peggy Olson and Betty Draper of AMC period drama Mad Men. We’ve been faithful viewers since the first season, and even the most fashion-forward Chicologists have found ourselves subtly incorporating Mad Woman touches in our closet– evening gloves, pearls, flared A-line skirts.

Some of us are lucky enough to be Joans: we accentuate our curvy figures with rich, deep colors and hourglass shapes, reminiscent of Lanvin. Or we’re Peggys: we mix and match textures with schoolgirl-y fabrics and patterns, Marc Jacobs’ basic off-kilter dream. Or we’re Bettys: classic nudes, ivories and light blues as delicate as any Rodarte design.

Or we’re Don’s various conquests, in which case our clothes are in a pile next to the bed.

Clinching this craze is Elle Magazine, which features a How-To slideshow from the show’s costume designer Janie Bryant, featuring replicas of Mad Men looks and her rationale behind the characters’ paletttes.

One of the commenters caught my eye:

Ugh. The last thing we need is more hipsters in retro clothes. Can’t anyone come up with a new style these days?

What do you guys think? Are we just couture sheep, mimicking the latest trend and cannibalizing the classier styles of yesteryear? Or, another way to look at it: When our kids see pictures of us in 2010, they could look like they were taken in 1960, 1970, or 1980– is there anything wrong with that?
